“I think I am going crazy” I hear this type of statement from my clients often… and I’ve felt this way too from time to time! When people find their way to My Holistic Nurse, many have been living with a compounded sense of dis-ease and identity crisis. They often had no idea that their peaking stress and emotional challenges were rooted in sensitivity to historical events that had been sitting in their unconscious mind, and energy fields, for decades. COVID Related Trauma-Proofing But it’s not just past traumas that are an issue these days. Healthcare personnel are predicting, and now preparing, for a tidal wave of COVID related stress and trauma disorders and ‘sleeping trauma’ triggering in those with pre-existing conditions, eg. seeing or wearing masks. The Australian Journal of General Practitioners explained that COVID-19 has “caused unprecedented stress globally, and the associated medical and health-related traumatic experiences pose significant risks for the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the exacerbation of pre-existing PTSD, among patients, general practitioners (GPs) and healthcare staff” (AJGP, vol 49, ed. 12, Dec 2020) The paper goes on to explain that in our current global climate, more people are at risk of PTSD than ever before, and our children are especially vulnerable to lifelong mental health challenges. Trauma is an essential conversation to have and stress management resources are necessary for ALL PEOPLE, especially our kids. Stress and Trauma Effects The effects of Trauma are very real, and can become chronic if not properly addressed. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is one result of exposure to trauma, and other post-traumatic conditions manifest such as depression, anxiety, heightened stress, sensory sensitivity, substance abuse and general changes in the ability to cope with daily life. We often ‘feel crazy’ because on the surface, trauma isn’t perceived as a common occurrence in the community. However, there are many people who live with the ongoing effects of past and present overwhelming stress and trauma that is debilitating to the point of severely impacting their daily quality of life. Significant work needs to be done to eliminate the stigma that can be associated with these kind of mental health challenges. Educating our community in mental health recognition and healthy management, whether you are experiencing your own personal stress response or not, is a must. Our community needs to be properly informed and each person actively building their personal toolkit of preventative or stress management tools and techniques to heal from trauma, or guard against mental health conditions developing with the prolonged stressors that COVID-19 is creating in ALL of us. There are Two Kinds of Trauma Use the link below to receive a free audio commentary of a very simple and brief overview of the differences between PTSD, usually caused by a single event, and CPTSD or Complex PTSD caused by prolonged and compounded stress and trauma over time. And finally... take a single deep breathe in now... intend for that breath to refresh your mind body and field as you inhale... then intend to release anything that doesn't serve you and let it run out of your feel and back to Mother Earth for transforming as you exhale... ahhhh! Be the change you seek... |
